All Saints' Day and Halloween

Current Finnish Saints' Day is a combination of the two, especially the Catholic Church since the Middle Ages leading a celebration, which are all saints day 1 November, and all believers Souls' Day 2 November. Today Lutherans in Finland and Sweden spend Saturday in All Saints' Day the earliest 31 October and no later than 6 November. In 2009, the All Saints' Day is 31 October here in Finland.

In Poland, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Finland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Lithuania, Croatia, Austria, Romania, Moldova, Hungary and Catholic parts of Germany, the tradition is to light candles and visit the graves of deceased relatives. I think that cemeteries are then very beautiful.

Young people here in Finland are not so interested in All Saints' Day. They are more interested in Halloween. In Europe Halloween is not as popular as in the U.S. In recent years, Halloween celebrations have become more common in Finland. Some of us may wear a Halloween dressing or like to decorate our home with Halloween decorations. Here in Finland many people love an American popular culture, comic books, films, celebrations and so on. Halloween is celebrated in Finland in general on the eve of All Saints Day.

I don't celebrate All Saints' Day or Halloween but I love candles and Carved pumpkin lanterns.

Happy Halloween!
